Job Search Tip and Idea Volunteering and making your path public

Job Search Tip and Idea Volunteering and making your path public This is a post about getting value out of trying to volunteer, without really volunteering. I was talking with my wife about a friend who is in transition.  She reminded me about the idea of volunteering, which I have written about, but its been a while. I love the idea of volunteering, but it didnt really work for me. I called a cople of organizations and when I tried to talk to them about volunteering, they gave me a deer-in-the-headlights response.  Like they never heard of someone wanting to volunteer to help. Im not sure what part of my approach was wrong, but this was definitely low hanging fruit and I moved on. I love the idea of volunteering for various reasons: You get out of the house.  This has all kinds of great implications (youve bathed, you have dressed in something other than pajamas, you have done your hair, etc.). You get to be around human beings, in a work environment.  This means you are around professionals which is a necessity in the job search. You get to meet new people.  Networking is the bomb, right?  This is a key point: make sure the places you volunteer make sense as far as meeting new people that can help you move your job search forward. more, Im sure. But this isnt a post saying you need to volunteer.  This is a post on how to get value out of trying to volunteer, whether you volunteer or not. Heres the scenario I came up with: Imagine you go to a meeting with professionals in your (industry/profession/geography). If you can somehow introduce yourself (some meetings have this as a standard practice. Otherwise, ask the host if you can introduce yourself and offer your volunteer time/services.), do something like this (keep it SHORT): My name is Jason Alba.  While Im in transition Ive decided to look for some volunteer opportunities. I have experience in collecting payroll temp information (yes, get that specific, if its the right audience) and ______.  Id like to volunteer at an organization that __________.  If you know of any companies that could use my expertise, please let me know after the meeting.  Again, Im in transition, and looking for a role in ________ doing ________. Edit that as you like. So heres what just happened in front of dozens or hundreds of your peers and colleagues, you gave them your value proposition and pitch.  You did it in a non-threatening, non-hurting way.  You have a captive audience, and they all got 30 to 60 seconds of interesting information about you. The Shift Worker Survival Guide

The Shift Worker Survival Guide Entering the world of shift work can take a mighty toll on you physically and mentally, if you’re not prepared. Do not be fooled by the travel benefits and the healthy sum of money sitting in your bank account, courtesy of the 4am starts. Though my three years and six months in the airline industry is dwarfed by most airline veterans, I can share with you the wisdom bestowed upon me when I first started as well as a few coping mechanisms I’ve devised along the way. Nanna Nap Nanna naps are critical to your survival as a shift worker. Being awake at odd hours in the morning is essentially working against the natural rhythm of your body. It’s absolutely vital that you refill the energy tank whenever possible, in order to keep your overall health and wellbeing in check. While the concept of napping might be foreign to you and a luxury that time poor individuals like yourself are unable to afford, squeezing in a 20-30 minute power nap will improve your mental alertness and help combat your fatigue. As invincible as you believe yourself to be, your body simply cannot run on an empty tank. If you are feeling drowsy, it is a wise idea to have a quick nap, before setting off to your next destination. Snack Central Store a handful of snacks in your locker at work as well as in your handbag. The hunger will creep up on you at the strangest times and if you’re anything like me, hunger is not an emotion that you can ignore. Trust me, the future hungry/grumpy you will be forever grateful. Nutritious nut or muesli bars make for an excellent snack. They can be eaten on the go without any mess and the long pantry life is an added bonus. These snacks should not by any means be a substitute for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but merely an energy boost to sustain you once the fuel light comes on. Invest in a Quality Mattress As a shift worker, every single minute of sleep counts. Tossing and turning in bed is time wasted and something we actively try to avoid. A restless sleep does not achieve the desired levels of energy nor does it leave you feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the day ahead of you. Don’t wait around for a mattress sale, invest in a quality mattress that will have your back for years to come. After all, investing in your sleep is an investment in your daily performance and productivity. Replace Your Regular Latte With an Apple As the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. While those with a severe caffeine addiction will be violently shaking their heads at this ‘ludicrous’ suggestion, allow me to explain myself. Apples contain natural sugars, carbohydrates and fibre. Evidently, the health benefits far surpass those of a regular latte. The process of digesting glucose releases a steady stream of energy into your body, providing you with an early morning energy boost, without the dreaded caffeine crash. Organisation is Key A varied work schedule may cause you to lose track of your days, not to mention your sanity. Planning your social events and noting down weekly errands and to-do lists once you’ve received your roster for the week, relieves your brain from remembering a multitude of tasks. Organisation allows you to manage the day-to-day, often trivial tasks, without feeling overwhelmed about the seemingly endless list of to-do’s. As a member of the Gen Y crew, I’m partial to the digital calendar my very own personal assistant who works 24/7, 365 days a year. His punctuality is impeccable and his loyalty is admirable. You can set friendly reminders to alert you to important tasks and events; these can be set up so that you receive them via email or as a pop-up on your smartphone screen. It is also a brilliant tool for those wanting to sync multiple schedules. For example, if your partner has an irregular roster, syncing your work schedules will enable you to plan more effectively and efficient ly. Juggling shift work with various other commitments family, kids, university, social events can be a challenge. But, making your health and wellbeing a number one priority and leaving behind the notion that you are an unbreakable machine, is integral to surviving this lifestyle. Bio: Alexandria Phillips worked in the airline industry as a passenger services agent for over three and a half years, before entering the digital marketing world to pursue her dream career. She actively draws on her personal experiences to deliver content that resonates with her readers. When she is not madly tapping away at her laptop, she is cooking up a storm and travelling the world.

Time Management Tips for the Unemployed

Time Management Tips for the Unemployed Now that you are unemployed, your calendar is very open. So, what do you now? This is something that I have personal experience with. For some, you are dealing with a swirl of emotions. For others, this is a relief. But you need a job, nevertheless. In my experience, you need a strategy for how to approach your days while unemployed.Let’s admit this: Sitting on the couch watching daytime television is not a strategy.Similarly, spending all day on the computer looking at LinkedIn, Indeed, and other job board sites can also be very counterproductive. What do you do? Time Management StrategyWhile UnemployedMy approach is to partition my day into 4 quadrants. Why do I do this?First, you need to treat job search as a full-time job. I have heard it before, “A job search is a marketing job where you are selling a high valued product â€" You”.Therefore, you need to treat your job search as a full-time job. And you need to organize your day strategically in a similar fashion.Quadrant #1: The Job SearchI would spend about a quarter of my day working on my job search. This could involve the following tasks: Maintaining my online presence Reviewing my resume Researching a company Practicing my interview skills Sharpening my branding efforts Talking to recruiters I continue to be amazed at the numerous resources available online. There are many good companies that can help me.But I cannot comfortably spend all day in front of my computer. I find this to be a form of solitary confinement and will become counterproductive.Quadrant #2: NetworkingI would devote about a quarter of the day to networking for a new job. This could be online, in-person, or picking up the phone. Now that I have the time, I intentionally try to connect with people whom I always meant to touch base with. I did not have time in the past while employed. In fact, with some of them, I seek advice and guidance on my next opportunity. After all, if I don’t let them know I need the help, how would they help me? Equally important, there are people in my network who are also in job search mode.I do what I can to offer them assistance, whether it be a mock interview or reviewing their resume. The job search can be frustrating. Why not be a source of encouragement and help someone?Quadrant #3: Personal GrowthAnother quarter of my day will be spent investing in my personal growth.I read books that I previously did not have time to read. In recent years, I have become fascinated with the interconnections between new product innovation, business strategy, and organization health. Some books I have read include: Patterns of Strategy The Drucker Lectures Team of Teams I have also taken online classes via outlets like LinkedIn Learning. After all, now that there is time, why not invest in ME and sharpen up my skills?Quadrant #4: Family TimeThis may sound obvious, but it nevertheless deserves mention. Since my schedule is not bound to a 9 to 5 job, I intentionally pay more attention t o my family. The flexibility of my schedule allows me to participate in the kids’ field day events, piano concerts, dance recitals, etc. These family memories are priceless. At the End of the DayJob searches can be very discouraging. But you can stay positive while unemployed. At the end of the day, a job search will take time. You need to make the best of it.As you network, invest in yourself and connect with your family and friends, you will be surprised at how it all helps your job search.

10 Tips for Embracing Your Evenings

10 Tips for Embracing Your Evenings Its so easy to get home from a long day at work, kick your shoes off and laze in front of the TV until bedtime. But why not use the evening hours for something more productive than catching up with the most recent episode of your favourite reality TV programme? It may seem like the day is over when the clock strikes 5 at work, but the evening is your oyster! Why not embrace the extra hours you have and use them well? Below I have compiled some of my top tips and tricks for having an awesomely productive evening: 1) Plan for the following day: Just before you go to bed, its always a good idea to prepare for the following day. Do this by ironing all necessary clothing items, planning your breakfast and making your lunch for the next day. This will not only make the following day easier, but it will also help you relax and have a better nights sleep. 2) Leave your shoes on! This is a trick for those of you who get home and dive straight for the sofa Leave your shoes on! The moment you take your shoes off, you begin to feel comfortable and therefore a little lazy meaning your more likely to flop onto the sofa and remain their until bedtime. Not sure if this tip is for me, but if youre finding it hard to remain motivated in the evening you should try this trick! Leave your shoes on like this little fella. 3) Allow yourself time away from the screen its very tempting to put Netflix on for a few hours or get the laptop out for  a night of online browsing, but think about all the things you could be doing instead of mindlessly staring at a screen! Call a loved one, read a book or even participate in a hobby or sport not only will you feel like you have a fresher head the next day but you will also notice that youll sleep better that evening. There is also a proven correlation between sleep disorders and artificial light, so close that laptop immediately! 4) But allow yourself some RR in front of the TV too! Although the previous point suggested that you should avoid screens in the evening, its more about keeping a balance! Its more than okay to catch up with your favourite TV programmes and kick-back on the sofa. Just make sure youre not spending all night doing it. Relax in front of the TV like these two! 5) Get changed: This is a bit of a no-brainer, but get out of your work clothes as soon as you get home! This will change your mindset and make you feel fresher so you can take full advantage of the evening ahead of you! 6) Allow yourself a bit of fun: It can be really easy to limit yourself on weekday evenings, but dont forget that having fun is key for a balanced lifestyle! If a friend is hosting a party or its a colleagues birthday, dont be afraid to have a bit of weekday fun! Its good for the soul. If you cant have a Vodka Beach Party, why not have a Cider Pub Party instead? 7)  Make the right dinner choices: A healthy body makes for a healthy mind, and a good sleep! Make sure the dinner you eat is a well balanced meal containing protein, vegetables and carbs. Overall this will keep you healthier, and youll feel better for it the next day! 8) Exercise: This goes hand-in-hand with the previous point, and its pretty important! Its recommended that an adult should exercise at least three times a week for half an hour or more. Getting your blood pumping releases endorphins in your brain which actually makes you feel happier as a result. Youll also have a better night sleep! 9)  Have an early night: Sleep. Its one of my personal favourite things about evening time! Sleep is one of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle. In order to have a great nights sleep, you should always avoid screens for up to an hour before bedtime (Take a look at point 3!). I also enjoy reading and listening to music as an alternative to any screen as a way to relax. Avoiding caffeine before sleeping is another sure-fire way to improve your sleeping. Zzz 10)  Reflect: An important thing to do every evening is to reflect on the days events. You can do this either alone or in discussion with your family or friends. Reflection is the perfect way to work out which aspects of your day are working well and which aspects arent working so well. From here you can re-jiggle, and change anything that you dont feel is working. How to you keep your evenings productive? Let me know in the comments!

Whats Your Life Purpose How To Recognize and Honor It In Your Life and Work - Kathy Caprino

Whats Your Life Purpose How To Recognize and Honor It In Your Life and Work Part of Kathys series Finding Brave to Build a Happier Life and Career In working with hundreds of professionals each year who long to build happier, more meaningful careers, so many have shared some version of this specific challenge: Kathy, I have no idea what my life purpose is. I want the work I do every day to be more meaningful and useful in the world, but I just cant figure out what my purpose is, no matter how hard I try. Men and women alike have shared that they believe theyll finally experience the excitement, passion and success they dream of if they could only figure out once and for all the true purpose of their life. And they want to discover one ultimate direction they should be pursuing that would make them happiest. The problem with this way of framing life purpose is that youll never identify it in a useful, practical way if youre constantly looking for the answer to What is my life purpose? What questions should you be asking instead? What people tend to mean when they ask the life purpose question is this: What activities would infuse my life with more joy and meaning? What should I be doing with my time and my abilities that would be helpful and make a difference? What direction(s) should I be pursuing that will feel better to me than this boring, meaningless work Im engaged in now that leaves me feeling empty? How can I stop feeling that Im wasting my time in work that is just a paycheck and nothing more? And what can I do in my time off from work that will help me feel my life matters more? I do believe that each of us can identify a key, over-arching purpose of our lives and live from that knowledge, and doing so is helpful and positive. And Ive seen that when we do, we open the door to experiencing more joy, peace, satisfaction and positive energy. But Ive also found that discovering your purpose doesnt necessarily look and feel like what people fantasize about. Its not the antidote for all the things that are wrong in your life, and all the ways you waste your time  with activities that youd rather not be doing. Thats something you have to address now through  closing the  seven damaging power gaps  that keep us from living the life we want. And it requires building much stronger boundaries, speaking up more assertively, and accessing more power, control and authority over our own lives. Below are 3 simple ways you can identify your life purpose, and start leveraging it powerfully today in what youre doing both professionally and personally: 1. Understand what life purpose truly is There have been many definitions of life purpose over the years, but the one key definition that seems to engage and enliven people the most is this: Your life purpose is one, unifying theme or idea that exemplifies your key goals in life, a theme that has been evident almost from the beginning of your life. Its the specific way in which you engage with life that makes use of all that you are and draws on your unique experiences, talents, abilities, and interests in a way that helps you achieve your highest goals while being of service of others. One way to begin to identify your life purpose is to make a thorough review of everything youve ever done that has brought meaning, joy and fulfillment along with a sense of knowing why youre on the planet at this time. Then youll want to intersect that with identifying how that meaning and fulfillment was tied to being of service â€" to another person, to your family or friends, to your community, organization, or to the world at large. Make it very simple and straightforward, and dont overcomplicate it. And realize that it can have a self-oriented focus, meaning that it can be about where you personally find joy. Here are some great examples of my clients definition of their life purpose: To be a catalyst for positive change in peoples lives To help people realize the light they have inside of them To bring order and calm to chaos To help organizations achieve their highest goals in the most effective way possible To turn my mess into a message and help others bypass my painful mistakes To help organizations lead and manage people more positively   To bring joy and laughter through humor To nurture my creative talents and help others find theirs To be a loud speaker for messages that need to be shared and the list goes on and on. To identify your life purpose, connect the dots from your childhood onward and discover who youve always been that makes a positive difference in peoples lives. (And if you have no idea how you make a positive difference to the people around you, go ahead and ask them to tell you how.) 2. Honor what you love to do and begin to move away from what exhausts and drains you   We cant feel and honor our life purpose when were bogged down every minute of the day with activities we hate to engage in, with people we dont respect. For instance, during my last years in corporate life, it took all the energy I could muster simply to get through the day at this toxic workplace that drained and demoralized me.  Only when I finally left all that behind and said Yes! to myself and to the idea of transforming my career to something Id be proud of, did my sense of life purpose emerge much more clearly. That was possible only when I took action that honored  my own needs and values. The key to uncovering your life purpose is to start behaving as if youre worthy enough to have one. Start saying no to work you hate. Redraw your boundaries. Tell your narcissistic friend that you simply wont tolerate this behavior any longer. Share what I call your dirty little secret (that secret that lives within you that youve been afraid to let anyone know) with someone you trust who is safe. Let go of what keeps you in shame and humiliation. Stand your ground and become a person who demonstrates self-worth, self-esteem and self-confidence. Once you find the bravery to do that (and get some outside help if you cant do it alone), the positive qualities within you that bring you a sense of meaning and purpose will be amplified and allowed to shine more brightly. 3. Recognize new ways in which youd like to be of help Virtually everyone Ive worked with who has a clear sense of life purpose is focused on being of service in some key way that supports others. This can be through the way they parent or teach, or their personal hobbies, or volunteering for a cause that matters to them, or doing work (either in their full-time role or as a consultant, private practitioner or in a side hustle) that makes them feel alive and of use. Dont make the mistake of thinking that you have to be honoring your life purpose every minute of the day.  You ARE your life purpose. Its not a particular action or career â€" its in how you live, how you engage with others, how you speak, how you support growth and positivity, and how you use your talents that adds something of value. If you feel youre very far away of recognizing your life purpose, start with identifying one new way you can do something that lights you up. Joy is the way to finding your purpose. No one whos miserable, exhausted, rageful and beleaguered can find the energy to even feel or see their purpose. The quickest path to identifying and leveraging your life purpose is through doing things that bring you joy and enhance your life experience. Thats the best and surest way to discover a compelling purpose and a set of overarching life goals that will nourish you and others around you, now and in the future. Using an Executive Wellness Resume Writing Service

Using an Executive Wellness Resume Writing ServiceMany employers will provide an executive wellness resume writing service to help people better understand their job description and what they can expect. When hiring for such a position, the individual can be assured that if he or she has attained a certain amount of health, they will be given consideration. The professional who has already gained the experience needed to fully understand the difference between the ability to attain good health and previous health issues is the person who should be working with the applicant. These professionals are often able to have a specific look at an applicant's resume, so that the company can then go on to evaluate the full picture of the qualifications of the person being considered. This will also allow the company to make a decision as to whether or not the job is appropriate.Of course, there are those who may not be in need of an executive wellness resume writing service at all, because they are able to maintain a healthy body and do not have any health problems that would limit their ability to perform in their job. In this case, the applicant should already know the things that he or she needs to do to stay healthy. Such things include eating right, exercising and making sure to stay off of certain substances. Also, it will be important to note that even though the requirements for jobs like these will vary from position to position, there are many of them that will consider factors that relate to job duties. For example, in the medical field, the basic responsibilities will include the ability to maintain proper blood pressure, heart and circulation levels, and more. If you take these considerations into account when writing your resume, you will have a much better chance of getting a call from a company that wants to meet with you about your application.Executive wellness resume writing service is just one of the many types of services that people can expect to use. These companies offer a wide range of services to help you craft your resume. Such services are not only useful for executives but also for those who are looking to break into certain fields. The world today is very busy, and the demand for workers has increased significantly since today's society focuses on family life. So, it is no wonder that there are many people who will be considering certain types of jobs. It is important to be prepared, especially when working in these types of positions because there are many responsibilities that will come with the position.Whether you are a business owner or a doctor, you should be prepared to handle any situation that can arise. After all, the last thing you want is to find yourself on the front page of the local newspaper, with a story about your medical and fitness history, and whether or not you were able to maintain your overall health during this time. You don't care that you went through some physical therapy when you got fired from your last job. That was no reason to get a heart attack and end up needing to get surgery. With the right executive wellness resume writing service and the right information, you will be well on your way to becoming a part of a strong community.
